Dr. Katherine Ayers joined Proton Energy Systems in July 2007 and currently serves as the Director of Research, with responsibility for setting and executing Proton's research strategy in electrochemical energy storage devices based on ion exchange membranes. Before joining Proton Energy Systems, she served as Staff Technology Engineer and team leader on several projects at Energizer Battery Company. Dr. Ayers received her Ph.D. at Caltech with Professor Nathan Lewis, measuring electron transfer rate constants at semiconductor electrodes. She has served as Principal Investigator on programs for multiple agencies including the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and ARPA-E. She was a finalist in 2010 and 2012 for the Connecticut Innovation Council's Women of Innovation Award, and was invited by the U.S. Secretary of Energy to be part of a Hydrogen Production Expert Panel in May 2012 as a subcommittee to the Hydrogen Technical Advisory Committee. She was also awarded the 2012 R&D Award from the Hydrogen Production Team at the Department of Energy for Outstanding Contributions to Hydrogen Production by PEM Electrolysis.
